There is no single route into real estate – and that is part of what makes the industry so dynamic. So we’re launching a series sharing snapshots of how people across Newsteer started their careers, what surprised them about the industry, and the advice they would give to others considering the sector.

First up is Nancy Taylor, who joined Newsteer in April 2024 and works in our Development Consultancy team.
What did you study at university?
BSc in Real Estate at the University of Reading
What has your career journey been like so far?
I went straight into work after graduating in 2022, joining a commercial graduate scheme where I worked for around a year and a half. I then moved to Newsteer in April 2024 and joined the Development Consultancy team, working mainly on CPO and commercial valuation projects. I passed my APC in November 2025 and became a Chartered Surveyor.
Expectations vs reality?
It was immediately clear how different work is in practice compared to the impression I had when learning about it at university.
Biggest surprise about the industry?
How long projects can take. Development and regeneration schemes often take years to progress, which really highlights the complexity involved in bringing projects forward.
Best thing about working at Newsteer?
The culture is wonderful, with a very friendly environment across all teams and levels. There is a genuine effort to support people at all stages of their career and help individuals succeed both personally and as part of the wider business.
What’s your advice for anyone considering the industry?
Real estate is much broader than many people realise. If you’re interested in the sector, don’t be put off by not knowing exactly where you fit yet – there are many different roles and routes once you start exploring it.
Thanks Nancy! At Newsteer, we value different perspectives and experiences – and we are always keen to support those exploring their route into real estate.
