Earlier this month we welcomed clients and industry colleagues to Newsteer HQ for our annual market event, exploring the question: How can the next London Plan help address London’s delivery challenges?
The session focused on giving our clients #OurSteer on what has not worked so well under the current Plan, what is starting to work again in today’s market conditions, and the policy changes that could help unlock development across the capital.
We were delighted to welcome Matthew Maple-Edwards from the London Borough of Hounslow as our keynote speaker. Matthew opened the event with reflections on major regeneration projects including High Road West in Haringey, incorporating White Hart Lane station and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His insights highlighted the increasingly active role of the public sector in shaping viability, enabling regeneration and supporting delivery in a challenging market.
The keynote was followed by a panel discussion bringing together perspectives from across the industry:
- Nick Vaughan, Southern Grove, shared the developer and operator perspective, discussing the growth of alternative living models such as PBSA and co-living.
- Chloë Phelps, BPTW, explored how high-quality design can still be achieved even in difficult viability conditions.
- David Brown, Newsteer, discussed the challenges facing currently stalled schemes and the early signs of renewed confidence from lenders.
- Eleanor Springer, Metro Dynamics, provided insight into how policy can better support wider economic growth alongside housing delivery.
The discussion was expertly chaired by Mark Byles, Director at Newsteer, who guided a thoughtful and engaging conversation on the realities of delivering development in London today.
Events like this are an important part of how we share insight with clients and industry partners. At Newsteer we aim to go beyond advice – bringing together planning, development, investment and policy perspectives to help shape practical solutions to the challenges facing the built environment.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a lively and constructive discussion.
