Newsteer advised and worked closely with the Camden and Islington NHS Trust in the delivery of a new 69 bed inpatient mental health facility at the Whittington Hospital.

We led the Trust and Design Team through a rigorous pre-application process, including engagement with Design Review Panel, Members and as multiple Officers at Islington and the adjacent neighbours. As a heavily constrained site on an existing live hospital campus (including being immediately adjacent to the only Grade II listed building on the campus), it was important to ensure a robust and sensitive design needing to take account of a range of factors.

Newsteer guided this process with full planning permission being approved in 2021. Newsteer has continued to advise the Trust and Design Team (led by Bam Construction and Ryder Architecture) through the construction and delivery phases which has resulted in an award-winning building, showcasing the very best in mental healthcare design.

Highgate East won the Healthcare category at the NLA New London Awards 2024.
