  • Excessive property costs were impacting on viability. JLP called in Newsteer to review and challenge the established methodology of agreeing and settling business rate appeals.
  • The aims were to increase refunds and reduce the time taken to achieve these. 
  • Working as part of the JLP team we devised a new valuation approach and agreed settlement across the whole portfolio without the need for formal challenges on stores that delivered the objective.

Business Rates Strategy

We have been retained by John Lewis & Partners to advise them on business rate strategy and implementation for 2017, 2023 and 2026 Rating Lists.

  • Devised new scheme of valuation based on structural changes in market demand.
  • Agreed reductions on all Department Stores in 2017 List. Prior agreed majority of portfolio on 2023 List. Navigated Check Challenge process on non-prior agreed stores
  • Assisting JLP is prior agreeing 2026 RV’s by engaging with VOA
  • Budget planning for new store formats
